How To Prepare Your Cat For Surgery
When the veterinarian has your beloved cat scheduled for surgery, it can be a troubling time. Many cats will successfully endure at least one surgery, specifically, the surgery performed when the cat is spayed or neutered. If your cat will be undergoing a scheduled surgery in the near future, here are some tips from the veterinarian at All Friends Veterinary Hospital in East Islip, on how to prepare your cat for that important surgical procedure.
Five to Seven Days Before the Surgery
Make sure your cat is up-to-date on all of his or her vaccinations. Also, inquire if there are any specific vaccination requirements before the surgery will be done. Some pet vaccines stimulate the immune system, but they require at least five days to provide proper protection for your cat. This is also a good time frame to verify if any of your pet's medications should be stopped or if new medications should be started.
The Night Before Surgery
If your cat has not been recently bathed, this is a good time to clean your cat and brush the cat's fur to make sure it is not matted. Also, clean your cat’s ears and trim the nails before the surgery. More than likely, you won't have an opportunity to bathe and groom your cat for some time after the surgery.
If your feline is an indoor/outdoor cat, it may be best to keep the pet indoors for the day and night before the surgery. Ask our pet clinic about any special diet instructions for the night before and/or day of the surgery. Make sure you have stocked your pet's favorite food for comfort during recovery.
The Day of the Surgery
More than likely, you will be instructed to not give your cat anything to eat or drink some hours before the scheduled surgery. Try to allow enough time for your cat to use the litter box one more time before departing to the vet's office. Try to make your cat's day as stress-free as possible. When saying good-bye to your cat before surgery, remain calm and do not become emotional. This helps your cat stay calm and will help our service providers as well.
